Creating Sustainable Apparel
Wendy Bauer Apparel
My Sustainable Fashion Commitment
Embracing environmental sustainability and a love of color and texture has led me to create distinctive women’s clothing. Using rescued fabrics that would have sat unused or likely thrown away I adapt these found materials into designs for today’s lifestyles. Sources for these fabrics come from consignment stores, closure sales, upcycling worn clothing and other household textiles and my collection. In addtion, to minimize waste I prioritize the use of zero-waste sewing techniques including incorporating “fixed” flaws at times into the garments and utilizing scraps for trim and embellishment on future pieces. All pieces are sewn by myself.
Designs For Today’s Lifestyles
Wendy Bauer Apparel is a place where a passion for fabric and fashion meets the realities of women wearing clothing that suit their bodies, ages, and sense of style. My apparel embraces the capacity of color to delight and of design to comfort. The bodies and lifestyles of real women guide my design process. Garments can be worn dressed up or down as the wearer wants across seasons and years.
While I use all kinds of exisiting fabrics, I focus on natural and washable materials.
My Story
My sewing began as a young girl and was enhanced by the weaving, knitting, embroidery and dyeing I have done over the years. Now in the preferment stage of life I am enjoying all aspects of slow fashion – finding, and adapting fabric into one-of-a-kind pieces that enhance their wearer. A long-time New Bedford resident, I create in a converted studio on the third floor of my home.
Now showing and selling my work has added to the joy I get from creating, when I see others enjoying it as well. Promoting and educating about sustainable fashion is also very rewarding.
